Second Look

Through targeted outreach, public awareness campaigns, and other organizing activities, LSJA engages youth, emerging adults, and their families to address to promote the development of positive outcomes among Texas youth and emerging adults.

Imagine being in high school and suddenly finding yourself sentenced to an adult prison for the next 40 years. While your friends and classmates go on to college or to a job, while they are having families and buying a home, you are sitting in a prison cell for a mistake you made as a kid.

The Lone Star Justice Alliance, the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition and Epicenter were pleased to publish the Second Look Book, a collection of letters from youth sentenced to the adult criminal justice system. Read their stories and decide for yourself — do they deserve a second look?

Each year, the Lone Star Justice Alliance and its partners, the Texas Inmate Family Association, Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, American Civil Liberties Union, Epicenter, the Campaign for Youth Justice, the Alliance for Safety and Justice, R Street, Grassroots Leadership, and the Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth host the Second Look Summit. This Summit convenes youth and their families to
  1. Formulate plans for policy change to better address the needs of Texas youth who are system-involved,
  2. Meet with experts for updates on the best litigation strategies available for challenging their sentences, and
  3. Build a community for future action.
